ON THE URBAN EDGE: Youth Art Boot Camp grooms students for careers

The event merged students and different media companies advising on work ethics, and entrepreneurship.

Hashtag youth art boot camp landed in Durban with an innovative step towards career building and entrepreneurship skills on Wednesday, 14 June.

Scheduled for 3 days, the #YABC in partnership with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), focused on career building for the youth.

“As a company we have the connections for young people to start themselves off in the media sector, and we started this camp to expand that knowledge”, said organiser Happiness Ndlovu.

Held at the Playhouse, the event merged students and different media companies.

Presenters Sandile Ntshingila from MTV and Nomalanga Shozi from Gagasi FM brought overwhelming joy to the audience with their presence.

From day 1, the event kicked off with career talks.

Representatives from different media companies subsequently took on the stage advising on work ethics, and entrepreneurship.

Journalism, music, radio, and television broadcasting were among the most highlighted media platforms.

Question and answer sessions throughout each day helped many understand their carrier paths.

“The #YABC has played a very important role in reducing the boundaries that exist between us as undergraduates and the real industry”, said music enthusiast Philani Mlambo from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The closing day incorporated the celebration of June 16 and opened a platform for a fashion show sponsored by EDTEA. Musician, Zakhele Madida better known by his stage name Zakes Bantwini closed the afternoon with a thrilling performance.
