How effective are tracking devices?

This reader had a difficult time with reporting his vehicle stolen.

YOUR article in the 9 June edition, Car recovery scams hits Westville, refers.

On Tuesday, 7 June my motorcar was stolen from the Gillitts Shopping Center in Clifton Road.

The vehicle with a tracking system, alarm and central locking etc was parked at 11am and on returning 30 minutes later the vehicle was missing.

The tracking company was advised of the theft within five minutes.

They could not get a signal from the vehicle and five days later we were advised they are still looking for the vehicle.

The question has to be asked – how effective are tracking devices if they can be deactivated so easily and quickly? (The system had been checked and confirmed as working shortly before).

A report was immediately made at Hillcrest SAPS.

Hours later they could still not provide a case number and confirmed the vehicle had still not been ‘circulated’.

The case number was eventually received by SMS some 12 hours later.

In the meantime I have received two calls (one on my cell and one on my landline) from persons claiming to be policemen advising that the car has been recovered and that I need to pay a sum of money to speed up the return of the vehicle.

How do they get all my information when reports were only made to the SAPS, the tracking company and my insurers?

Rather perturbed
