Warning: not all flu-like symptoms are flu

"If it wasn't for the community speaking out and me reading the Highway Mail, who knows how long it would of taken to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment."

MY husband, Ken, has been feeling ill for the past few months with flu-like symptoms and has seen our doctor a number of times and has been on two courses of antibiotics.

It was only when we read the article on the front page of the Highway Mail last week that the penny dropped.

He went back to our doctor and asked for a blood test on Saturday and has just received news that he has tested positive for bilharzia.

We had gone with Monteseel Adventures to enjoy the Inthithuko 4×4 Trail down to the Mqeku River Picnic site in October 2016 and Ken enjoyed a swim in the river.

If it wasn’t for the community speaking out and me reading the Highway Mail, who knows how long it would of taken to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.

I am most concerned that the river has been tested and given the all clear.

The river may be clear now, but it certainly was not when my husband and all the other people were infected?

I would like to send a warning to anyone who may have spent some time down at the Mqeku River Picnic site in the past six+ months and now has recurring flu-like symptoms to go have a blood test to eliminate bilharzia.

If left untreated it can be quite serious. Be warned, not all flu-like symptoms are flu.

The upside is that my husband can now get the treatment he needs, thanks to the Highway Mail.
