The trajectory events in the world seem to be heading is straight into darkness and destruction.
Man’s inhumanity to man blows our minds.
Headlines shriek madness and mayhem all over the planet.
And, close to home, our rainbow nation is spinning out of control and we begin to smell the bad breath of anarchy in our midst.
Then, while I perused this week’s range of photographs, I see handcyclist, Ari Seirlis (the dedicated National Director of the QuadPara Association of South Africa since 2001) getting assistance from his friends during the aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Bridge Fund, and I am struck by what this represents.
While the big picture may be looking bleak, on the ground, there is, in fact, plenty to feel hopeful about. I met a lovely woman from Keep Kloof Beautiful last week.
Sandra Wickee explained their voluntary work, and how, against all odds, they persist in keeping Kloof as beautiful as possible. Paging through past Highway Mail newspapers and in this edition, there are numerous stories of people helping people and people helping animals.
I read that 1 700 000 people gathered in Bloem to pray for our country with Angus Buchan and many others gathering in places of worship to do the same. In this paper you will also see those intrepid gogos hitting the ground running with energy and determination during the Gogolympics evoking a smile as you vicariously share the joy.
People are still striving to be their best on the sportsfield, at the workplace, in schools, colleges and universities.
The WI ladies still meet to inspire each other doing crafts and working for their charities.
The many NGOs and NPOs continue to raise funds and help people. Many individuals and groups are looking after the environment and standing together to protest violations.
American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, said, “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud”, and this is what our community is doing despite the storm brewing overhead.
