Our national flag, our pride, but not upside down

Wanye Williams of Moseley, Queensburgh ponders on the country's flag etiquette.

EDITOR – Is our national flag not supposed to be the pride of our nation?

When our national flag is raised at military parades, participants stand at attention and a salute is given for the duration of the flag being raised.

In America it is considered a federal offence if the American flag is raised upside down.

How sad it is to see that after 22 years of democracy in South Africa, so many people still do not know which way up to fly our national flag.

In the past two months, I have seen at least four police stations in the Durban area including our very own Malvern police station proudly flying our national flag upside-down, right next to the police services flag which has the South African flag incorporated in it the correct way up.

If our police services can’t even get that right, how can we expect them to get the crime situation sorted out?
