Let’s reclaim our space

It used to be a great pleasure driving on that stretch of road because for a few kilometers, I would forget about corporations imposing their branding and products in my head space.

EDITOR – Perhaps this could be a talking point, I hope your readers share the same sentiments. I drive on the N2 freeway on a daily basis, to and from work and I noticed that they have erected a billboard, depending on which side of the road your are driving, placed just before or after the cement factory.

It used to be a great pleasure driving on that stretch of road because for a few kilometers, I would forget about corporations imposing their branding and products in my head space. Instead, I would enjoy the great scenery – the greens, fresh air and for a few seconds on a brightly lit day, I would catch a glimpse of the waters of the Umhlatuzana River flowing gently. I miss those days.

I cannot stand these billboards. Why must my free flow of thoughts be confronted by what big corporations feel I should have the need for? Would you not agree that public space is becoming more and more saturated with adverts? I know that when alterations are to be done in a residential area, those who live within close proximity to the proposed alterations, are given notice and a chance to object if they feel it necessary, do billboards in public spaces work in the same manner?

I hope I do not come across as bitter, but as courtesy, I would like to have the option to accept or deny exposure to these adverts. While we could argue to say that social media platforms also have a stream of adverts that are also imposed, let’s acknowledge that when you log in, perhaps those are the terms and conditions of that site. I sincerely feel that public space is for the public and the public must have a say regarding land use. Let’s reclaim our space.
