Cats eyes have lost their shine

Letter to the Editor - week ending 25 November 2016.

EDITOR – I wish to draw your attention to what I believe is a dangerous situation on the M13, at least between the bottom of Field’s Hill and the Hillcrest Old Main Road on and off ramps.

Some months ago new cats eyes were installed (at great inconvenience to motorists, I might add) on this newly tarred section of the M13. They are a type which have a solar panel, presumably to charge some sort of battery, so that they self-illuminate at night unlike the conventional type which simply reflect light. On the face of it, this would seem a marked improvement, and they worked very well for a few weeks until one by one they have failed. Now, just months later, I guess more than half are no longer operating and there are some quite long stretches where none are working. This is especially dangerous at this time of the year because of the misty conditions which often prevail. I believe that in the interests of road safety, the faulty devices should be replaced as a matter of urgency.

I might add that similar cats eyes were installed on Field’s Hill about 10 years ago which also had to be replaced not long afterwards. It seems that the authorities have learned nothing from that experience.

Fix it
