Fines left, right and centre on Field’s Hill

Letter to the Editor - week ending 19 August 2016.

EDITOR – Up until recently I had only ever received two traffic fines. I am 45 years old and have been driving in the Highway area for 27 years.

Two weeks ago I received two traffic fines, each for R300, on two consecutive days, one was for going 92kms p/h, and the other 93km p/h. Yesterday (10 August) I received yet another fine, so in total R900.

The section of road from the St Johns Bridge on the M13 towards Field’s Hill (Westbound) has always been 100km. It then became 80km at the bottom of Field’s Hill. However, the Traffic Department has now put up cameras on an overhead beam over the road, and moved the 80km sign to just after the onramp going onto the M13 from Pinetown.

Many people are unaware and are being fined. I think this is disgusting. Why is a straight section of road been reduced to 80km p/h? Is it just to fine mostly law abiding, unsuspecting people such as myself? Seriously, can the crime fighters not make better use of their time, and not entrap the guileless drivers?
