Searching for my guardian angel

Letter to the Editor - week ending 12 August 2016.

EDITOR – The past week has seen torrential rains wreak havoc, especially on our roads. Sheets of water covered the roads in certain areas resembling rivers. Drivers had no option but to navigate through the sometimes treacherous terrain to reach their destination. While driving in these hazardous conditions one could observe the water gushing out the top of manhole covers.

SA has not received such heavy rains in a long time. The accumulation of dirt in the drainage system that could have solidified thereby creating blockages in the drains can be the reason for the excessive surface run off onto the roads. If this is a justifiable reason, then the fingers are directed to the stormwater department that is tasked with the duty of maintaining the drains in the country, especially in respect of blockages.

Out of the destruction of the flash floods emanated many heros who risked their lives to save others. A 17-year-old schoolboy, Cameron White, put his own life in danger when he saved the life of Shakila Singh when the water began to rapidly rise while she was trapped in the car. Shakila stated that her guardian angel was looking after her therefore she was lucky to be alive to tell the tale. This real life heartwarming incident begs the question, do guardian angels really exist?
