Something needs to be done about the striking

Letter to the Editor - week ending 17 June 2016.

EDITOR,

What has happened to our Metro Police, fire brigade and even the SAPS? I thought all licensed road-users were fully entitled to the unrestricted use of roads unless there was an accident, roadworks or other unforseen road calamity that justified them being closed.

The Metro Police in particular have the duty – surely with the support of the other above mentioned bodies – to ensure law-abiding citizens have the right of safe travel on our roads.

In the days of our Durban Borough Police and then the City Police, this was the rule. Now we have trouble-makers/terrorists threatening law-abiding citizens with rocks and fire and stopping such citizens from using their lawful rights. Their action is upheld by our so-called protectors, who block us from our right of access to essential roads. This causes many lawful citizens to lose money from lost airfares and work and there may be a life at risk since they cannot access the important hospitals that this road gives access to.

Our mayor, who is one of the highest paid in South Africa, does he accept this? Do our police not have teargas, water hoses or rubber bullets or other systems to stop this illegal behaviour?

I was told by one of the Metro Police officers in Pinetown that it was for the Westville police to sort out. I thought it was called the Metro Police force. How long must lawful citizens put up with this highly illegal action of people who have not paid rates and expect to be given everything just because of violent actions?
