Tax much?

"Remember the old line about 'killing the goose'?"

EDITOR – If you’re over 65 this may interest you.

Previously those of us who’ve made it to 65, or beyond – which is in itself something of an achievement these days – were entitled to deduct from taxable income all medical expenses.

That, to those of us without medical aid, was useful relief.  SARS, in a breathtaking ‘barrel-scraping’ exercise has, from this year, reduced that very reasonable rebate to just one third of those medical costs.

So, in effect, SARS is now fully taxing two thirds of the ever-rising costs the elderly incur in not only staying alive, but remaining as taxpayers.

Remember the old line about ‘killing the goose’?
