Debut win for More while Mashele breaks record at Boxer Super Run

There was plenty to celebrate for some of the elite runners in both the men’s and women’s races at this year’s event.

PRECIOUS Mashele defended his Boxer Super Run 5km title in fine fashion on Sunday (October 13) at Blue Lagoon.

Mashele also became the fastest South African to complete a 5km run on home soil with an impressive time of 13:39.

In the Women’s Elite Race, Karabo More took top honours, crossing the finish line in 16:16.

“I’m very happy to have won today, especially since it’s my birthday. The race was exciting. We ran the same route as last year, but this time, without the wind. All of my Boxer teammates were fierce competition – whenever we race, they’re always on the podium, so I knew they’d push me hard. In the last 2km, I made sure to up the pace so they couldn’t catch me.”

Boxer Athletics Club claimed all three spots on the podium with Kabelo Mulaudzi finishing second and Chris Mhlanga third.

Making her debut at the Boxer Super Run, Karabo More of Boxer Athletics Club delivered a standout performance in the Elite Women’s Race.

“I’ve been off the racing scene for a while, so today was all about regaining my confidence. As part of my comeback, I’ve decided to enter races as they come, just to gauge where I am in my training. My strategy was to stay with the pack, work with the other women, and then in the last 2km, really push. It’s all about taking risks and seeing where they put you. I didn’t expect to win today.”

Gerda Steyn (Phantane AC) came in second, with Cacisile Sosibo (Boxer Athletics Club) finishing third.

“The Boxer Super Run delivered a thrilling display of talent today in Durban,” said Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports. “We are thankful to all the participants, supporters and sponsors who contributed to the success of this event. It was inspiring to see elite athletes, emerging talent and runners from all walks of life come together to push their limits over 5km.”
