Fabulous reads: Exposing little city slickers to farm life

Book review- Katerina the Cat and Other Tales From the Farm by Michael Morpurgo

Katerina the Cat and Other Tales From the Farm, Michael Morpurgo, HarperCollins UK, ISBN: 9780008451523

THIS is the perfect little book for any parent who has kids living in the city. It contains a collection of three heartwarming stories inspired by the Farms for City Children Foundation, founded in 1976 by the book’s author, Michael Morpurgo, and his wife, Claire.

The foundation has enabled thousands of city-raised children to experience life on a farm.

The last story, while featuring some tough and emotional topics, is guaranteed to steal your heart. We meet Rosa, who has to flee her home country – the Ukraine – due to the war.

Tragically, on the day her family has to make their departure, her beloved cat, Katerina, is nowhere to be found. Expecting the worst, they are forced to leave her behind.

Rosa’s dad, who has decided to stay to fight for their homeland, promises to look for Katerina… While trying to rebuild her life, staying with friends of her family, Rosa’s school takes her class on a trip to a nearby farm, where she makes a friend who needs her just as much as she needs him. This is a beautiful and charming little book, wonderfully illustrated with black-and-white images. – Mariclair Smit – 5/5 stars
