Westville residents team up to feed feral cats

A group of volunteers who have made it their mission to help the stray cats at the Westville Country Club need help with cat food and money to sterilise them.

AS a regular visitor at the Westville Country Club, resident Linda Auld noticed a number of stray feral cats roaming around and decided to do something about it.

With no one taking care of them, the cat lover said she contacted another fellow cat lover, Brandon Eldridge, and with other residents, they have set up feeding stations which they take turns to feed.

The group of volunteers do not only feed them but they also sterilise them to ensure that they do not become a bigger problem.

Auld said they waited a few weeks for the cats to get used to the routine, and once they were comfortable, they were able to trap and sterilise them.

To date, 16 of the 20 cats have been sterilised.

This was done with the funds that were raised with the musical festival which was held at the club.

Eldridge, who also feeds 30 other cats in the Westmead area, said they use the TNR system which is Trap, Neuter and Release.

“I started feeding and helping sterilise them eight years ago. I used to see these feral cats with a number of kittens. Through Covid, floods and unrest, we still continued to look after these cats.”

He said it is important to sterilise cats as a single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 75 000 kittens in just 15 years.

The team uses money from their pockets to feed these cats.

“The Westville Country Club is a lovely and safe place, and we would like to continue taking care of them, and we need funds for food and sterilisation. We appeal to anyone who can assist us.”

To assist, contact Linda Auld on 081 474 9360.
