Call to Durbanites to tackle pollution on International Coastal Clean-up Day
At last year's clean-up event, volunteers and environmental organisations collected three tonnes of waste at Beachwood Mangroves Beach.
THIS weekend, hundreds of thousands of people across the globe will host clean-ups, including several across eThekwini, such as one at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve beach, to show the need for collective action to keep our beaches clean and our oceans free from litter.
This all coincides with International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of the month every September.
The day is about empowering people to take an active role in the preservation and cleaning up of the oceans and our beaches.

The North Durban Honorary Officers, who host their monthly open mornings at the beach, have reminded visitors that the clean-up will replace guided walks on the day.
The clean-up runs from 08:00 until 12:00.
According to honorary officer Terry Goulding, last year’s clean-up saw three tonnes of waste being collected at the beach.
There will, however, still be a guided birdwalk. Residents are encouraged to book through the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve page.
