Pinetown residents call for unkempt plot to be cleared

The grass, which has not been cut for almost two years on a plot on Gordon Road, Pinetown, is attracting uninvited visitors and is also a safety concern.

THE deserted overgrown Eskom plot in Gordon Road is not just an eyesore for the neighbours but it attracts snakes and rats into their homes.

What’s more, it also is a security problem as it is easy for criminals to hide or flee through it as the plot goes up to the M13 Freeway.

The Baxter family, who have resided in their home for 42 years, said the issue of the plot maintenance started early last year.

“We have been calling and sending emails but to no avail. Recently, we had a nice lady, who is an environmental officer at the eThekwini Municipality, trying to assist us, but nothing has been done.

“I am a person who likes following the system and doing everything by the book – going public is my last resort – we have tried everything,” said Doug Baxter.

He said that what he fears the most is what will happen to their home should the bush catch fire as the grass is very dry.

“A small spark could cause lots of damage.”

His wife, Wendy, said that in the past, they would send out their grievances about the plot to the eThekwini Municipality to assist since it is a struggle to get help from Eskom.

According to Wendy, the municipality would send people to clear the plot and liaise with Eskom once the job was done.

“We do not know what happened; we are just stuck with this unkempt plot and uninvited visitors,” she said.

The Highway Mail did not get any response from Eskom and the eThekwini Municipality by the time of publishing.
