Escombe church hosts fundraising market

St Catherine's Church will offer vendors a space to sell their items while also raising funds for the church.

THE Queensburgh community is invited to a fundraising market which will be held on Saturday, August 31, at St Catherine’s Church, 442 Main Road, Escombe.

One of the fundraising committee members, Toni Nelson, said the market will offer vendors a space to sell their items while also raising funds for the church.

“The money will also be used to renovate the church which is a monument in the area – our church has been in existence for more than a 100 years,” she said.

The church also started an outreach programme early this year to feed the people in the area.

Jay Pillay, who is in charge of the programme, said that due to finances, the parishioners cook the food every two months and go out to the Hillary, Bellair, Seaview, Malvern and Seaview areas where they feed about 300 people.

“We prepare hot meals for the people, and bread and fruit, depending on what we get,” he said.

Parish priest Father Lindelwa Dlamini said their aim is to feed the people once a month or even every weekend.

The office is open weekdays from 08:30 to 13:00. The market day is also in association with Escombe SPAR, and the church fundraising committee extended their gratitude to Bruce Kirk from SPAR for always assisting them.

“Before Covid, the church ran a soup kitchen from the premises, but it all stopped. Everyone is struggling so that meal does put a smile on their faces. People need to know that Christianity does not end in the church buildings, but we have to reach out to the people and help them where we can,” he said

The next feeding programme will be held on August 17, and people who wish to assist the church with food items can contact the church office on 031 464 7522. The office is open weekdays from 08:30 to 13:00.
