Pinetown team triumphs at soccer tourney

Pinetown Boys' High School won the Senior Boys' division at the Kearsney Soccer Tournament while St Mary's DSG won the Senior Girls' division.

PINETOWN Boys’ High School won the Senior Boys’ division at the Kearsney Soccer Tournament where almost 600 aspiring young soccer players from around the country took part in the weekend’s three-day soccer tournament held at Kearsney College.

St Mary’s DSG won the Senior Girls’ division while Merchiston Preparatory School won the Junior Boys’ division.

Following last year’s inaugural Kearsney Soccer Tournament, this year, 34 teams participated, demonstrating their skills in a competition played in a wonderful spirit of good sportsmanship and competitive fun.

Individual best players of the tournament were announced as: Khulekani Nxumalo from Pinetown Boys’ High School in the Senior Boys’; Anna Birt from St Mary’s DSG Senior Girls’, and James Magor from Highbury Preparatory School and Lindokuhle Langa from Merchiston Preparatory School from the Junior Boys’ teams.

In addition, this year, the best players from each division were named in a Best 11 Team of the Tournament.

The Senior Boys’ teams that participated were Durban High School, Northwood School and Clifton College (Durban); Maqhutshane Secondary School and Siyajabula High School (both KwaNyuswa); Curro Grantleigh (Richard’s Bay); Ashton (Ballito); Paul Roos (Stellenbosch); Urban Academy (Gqeberha); Tuks Sport High School, Sutherland High and Curro Hazeldean (Gauteng); Lebone ll College (Rustenburg) with hosts Kearsney College, Thomas More and Pinetown Boys’ High from the Highway area.

Participating girls’ high schools included Durban Girls High, Danville Park and Maris Stella (all Durban); St Mary’s and Thomas More (Kloof); Ashton (Ballito); Curro Hazeldean (Pretoria) and Lebone ll College (Rustenburg).

They were joined by 10 local primary school teams from Hillcrest Primary, Kloof Senior Primary, Winston Park, Thomas More, Atholl Heights Primary, Ashton Ballito, Reddam Ballito, Merchiston from Pietermaritzburg and two teams from Highbury Prep.

“Following the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural tournament, the college was proud to continue to be a catalyst in ensuring the development and growth of soccer among girls and boys at school level in South Africa,” said Kearsney headmaster Patrick Lees.
