Bellair CPF chairman urges community to contact 10111

Bellair Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Clive Reddy advised the public to contact the 10111 centre should they not be able to get their through to their nearest police station.

CHAIRPERSON of the Bellair Community Policing Forum (CPF) Clive Reddy has encouraged the community to contact 10111 in the case of police emergencies.

This comes after a resident in need of assistance could not get through to the Bellair SAPS Station.

The 10111 number is a 24-hour crime-reporting call centre that deals with requests from the public.

Calls can be made on a landline – these calls are free – or from a cellphone, which is charged at the normal cellphone rates.

“While the Bellair SAPS actively responds to crime scenes, I encourage residents to also make 10111 their point of call because all calls to the centre are recorded. There are times during electricity outages, load-shedding or phone lines being busy that you cannot get through to the station.

“By calling the 10111 centre, it states what time the call was logged. The information is captured and a reference number is given to the caller as proof and for future reference. The complaint is assigned to the local SAPS Community Service Centre Sector vehicle or the nearest flying squad vehicle. We also encourage residents to alert the CPF and their respective neighbourhood watches,” he said.

His comments were echoed by the acting spokesperson for the Bellair SAPS Sergeant Rachel Simangele Mseleku.

“The community are always welcome to contact our station on 031 463 1883, but we also advise them to call 10111 because the number is operational for 24 hours,” she said.

****SAPS’s advice for when calling 10111****

When you dial 10111 anywhere in the country, a call centre operator answers the call and takes the necessary information. Remain calm when making an emergency call, and speak clearly while giving the following information:

– your name and address
– your telephone number, if requested
– the nearest street corner to where the incident occurred
– other useful information, such as the number of suspects, a description of the suspect, whether or not the suspects are/were armed and the direction in which they fled, if available.
