Teagan touches down to world champs

Teagan Griffiths will represent South Africa in the Touch World Cup 2024 which will be held in the United Kingdom.

WESTVILLE student Teagan Griffiths will represent South Africa in the Opens Mixed Team where 118 teams from across the world will go head-to-head in the Touch World Cup 2024.

The world cup will be hosted by the Federation of International Touch in Nottingham, United Kingdom, from July 15 to 21.

The link-position player went to trials last year for the Junior World Cup, during which she was selected to play mixed. The same coaches are coaching the senior team this year and invited her back to play. She attended a few training camps in Johannesburg, and that’s when the team was formulated.

Griffiths said her passion for touch rugby was ignited in 2018 when she was in Grade Eight at Westville Girls’ High School.

“During my first year, I played in my first KwaZulu-Natal team, and we won a gold medal. Every year, I compete in KwaZulu-Natal tournaments on senior and junior level, and I had the privilege to play in the Junior World Cup last year, during which we placed second overall,” said the Westville Varsity College learner.

The five-day tournament includes various divisions such as ladies’, men’s and mixed teams. Griffiths will be competing in the mixed division where people of all ages and genders will be competing. She said she is excited as it will be fast and extremely competitive, resulting in a high-scoring game.

“I have now started to give my love back to the sport by coaching young girls and KwaZulu-Natal teams. I am captain of the Premier League ladies’ team, the Mavericks, that I also coach, and I am very proud that the team won first place at our last league.”

She added that she is grateful for the life-changing coaches that she has encountered as she has gained confidence and is honoured to be able to play her favourite sport as a hobby and professionally.
