AFTER seeing the struggle that people are facing, the Durban Early Car Club decided to help the community.
Committee member Steve Nell said they were approached and asked to visit the Catholic Church in Pinetown to see the feeding scheme and meet with the dedicated team.
Nell said the church feeding scheme takes place every Tuesday.
“When we arrived, we met with Father Sifiso Ndlovu. We observed their team, led by Nomusa Zulu, in action, making sandwiches and preparing cups of cold drink. They start preparing at around 05:45 to begin serving at 07:30. They rely exclusively on donations from the parishioners each Sunday.”

The club members also discovered that if they don’t have enough money to purchase their weekly supplies, they supplement the shortfall from their own pockets. The church feeding scheme serves between 60 and 80 meals, sometimes going up to 100 meals each Tuesday.
“They also hand out a grocery parcel once a month, with groceries supplied by the parishioners.”
After observing this dedicated team, Nell said they decided to provide a bit of relief for them.
“We decided to relieve the team one Tuesday by operating a soup kitchen ourselves. Thanks to a very generous donation from Warwick Perks of Kloof Cars Sales, we were able to purchase all the ingredients to make a thick meat-and-vegetables soup.
They prepared and cooked the soup on the Monday.
On Tuesday morning, the car club members transported everything to the church and set up the gas burner to heat the soup up.
“Some of our members were in the kitchen, preparing the sandwiches under the watchful supervision of some of the church’s team. At precisely 07:30, the Father gave a short prayer, and the first people were allowed in to receive the meal,” said Nell.
He advised other businesses in the area to consider contributing to the feeding scheme. To assist, contact the church office on 031 702 7337 or 031 702 7376.
