Thrifting community growing

Highway thrifters gathered at Link Halls Centre to share their collection.

A GROUP of thrifters and upcyclers gathered for their pop-up market at Link Hills Centre on Sunday, May 5. This group is made up of community members who collect second-hand clothing and crafted and upcycled items.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, organiser Sanja Hanekom said the pop-up market is for people who wish to share items that they no longer need.

“Instead of these things ending up in the dump site, they can just sell them to people who might need them and put them to good use,” she said.

The pop-up thrift market is part of a series of markets that are organised by Hanekom in the Kloof Scouts Hall every month. “The thrifting community we belong to came from inspiration I drew from my 11-year-old child who had decided that she wanted to wear only second-hand clothing. She said the reason for this is because she does not want to contribute to pollution. She said she feels that if something can be reused – why not?

“As a thrifter, I also noticed how many more people are interested in thrifting, and there’s also a new generation of thrifters coming up. With experience and qualifications in marketing, I was able to gather people and help them sell their stuff. Some people are migrating and looking to sell their things on Facebook markets, and I noticed that things like clothing hardly sell on those groups. This is because people want to see clothes and make sure they fit before they make the purchase,” she said.

Hanekom said the turn-out proved that there is a community of thrifters.
