New beauty pageant to empower eThekwini’s young women

Curvaceous women of all races are encouraged to participate in this exciting and empowering programme which is aimed to empower women who are overlooked in the beauty and fashion industry and to advocate against discrimination and stereotyping.

IN a bid to empower young women who are in the beauty and fashion industry, the eThekwini Municipality has introduced a new beauty pageant.

According to the municipality’s media statement, this new Miss eThekwini Curvaceous beauty pageant, which falls under the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture unit, seeks to empower women to become self-sufficient in society and to boost their self-esteem.

The municipality encourages all curvaceous women of all races to participate in this exciting and empowering programme. The City says, “The objective of this initiative is to empower women who are overlooked in the beauty and fashion industry and to advocate against discrimination and stereotyping. Auditions for this inaugural pageant will be held between March 2 to 23, in four regions of eThekwini, from 07:00 to 15:00.”

The programme for Miss eThekwini Curvaceous will take place in major shopping centres such as Phoenix Plaza on March 2, The Workshop Shopping Centre Durban CBD on March 9, Chatsworth Centre on March 16, and Hammarsdale Junction on March 23.

The municipality says the winner of the competition will be crowned at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on April 26. “The winners of the competition have a chance to win cash prizes, gifts, mentorship and development activities as well as participate in major empowerment programmes,” the City added.

Municipal workers are prohibited from participating in this beauty pageant.

Aspirant curvaceous women are invited to audition as per the following requirements:

• you need to be between the ages of 16 and 35 years – bring your ID or birth certificate
• only women from size 36 and above are welcome to participate in Miss eThekwini Curvaceous
• Miss Curvaceous Teen is for those aged 16 to 21 years and Miss Curvaceous Queen for those aged 22 to 35 years
• eThekwini residents only – bring councillor letter or utility bill
