Dentist shares tips on how to get children to brush their teeth

Durban dentist Dr Udhir Harrinarain says it is important to get children used to brushing their teeth twice a day from as early as possible.

CHILDREN’S Dental Health Month is an important observance that focuses on promoting good oral health habits among children.

It is celebrated annually in February, and it’s a time to raise awareness about the significance of dental care and encourage parents, caregivers and communities to prioritise children’s oral hygiene.

The month is an initiative aimed at educating children and their families about the importance of oral health. It emphasises the prevention of dental problems through regular check-ups, proper dental hygiene and a balanced diet.

Durban Caxton Local Media spoke to local dentist Dr Udhir Harrinarain to share tips for parents to help them get their children to brush their teeth.

He said there are a few methods parents can adopt, and we do understand that time in the mornings and evenings can be hectic, but here are a few tips you may find useful:

– Buy them a fun toothbrush or special toothpaste they can pick out so they get excited to brush their teeth.

– Brush your teeth alongside them – this makes it an activity that you do together, but also, you will be leading by example.

– You could do a sticker reward chart if you wish, but overall, my opinion is that you should get them used to brushing their teeth twice a day as early as possible – you will thank yourself later.

Asked about when the right time for children to start brushing their teeth is, he said parents should massage the gums of newborns and wipe their mouth and tongue.

“Brushing should start as soon as the first tooth appears,” he said.

He emphasised that children should brush their teeth twice a day – every morning and every night before bed.

“They should avoid eating after brushing their teeth in the evening. Limit sugar intake, and have regular dental visits,” he said.
