5 benefits of using hyaluronic acid on your skin

After using the beauty ingredient on her skin for more than six months, Caxton Local Media journalist Nia Louw gives an honest review of hyaluronic acid.

AS makeup and skincare trends come and go, it’s oftentimes difficult to pinpoint what works well for your skin. Skincare and anti-ageing products are all the buzz in this day and age, and I’m always on the lookout for products that will help keep my skin clear of pimples and blemishes, and most importantly, I’m always looking for a product that will leave my skin glowing! In light of National Hyaluronic Acid Day on January 21, which raises awareness of the hydrating benefits of the skincare ingredient hyaluronic acid, I decided to share my thoughts on it.

Last year, I came across posts on social media where skincare enthusiasts were raving about hyaluronic acid, and I was immediately intrigued. With a quick Google search, I found out that hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body’s connective tissue and is the main component of what gives your skin structure. Various articles gave a list of benefits obtained from using the product on your skin – but I’ve been duped before, and I needed to try the product out for myself.

I started using hyaluronic acid in June of 2023. Read more to find out why it’s now permanently a part of my skincare routine!

 1. Acne/Pimple scars heal faster

I have a bad habit of popping large pimples on my face, and this has often led to scarring on my face. After using hyaluronic acid on my pimple scars, the discolouration caused by scarring was cleared much quicker.

 2. Skin looks more supple

I found that after using hyaluronic acid on my skin before I sleep, my skin looks moistened and full when I wake up.

 3. Moisturises the skin

My skin is a combination of dry and oily in various sections, so when my skin is dry in certain areas, I apply products that moisturise my skin well. Hyaluronic acid is an excellent moisturiser because it functions as a humectant and holds water molecules on the surface of your skin to keep it nice and hydrated.

 4. Anti-aging and anti-wrinkle properties

If you are trying to reduce the visibility of wrinkles, hyaluronic acid is the product for you. I don’t have any visible wrinkles, but after a long week, I do get deep and dark bags under my eyes. After a few nights of using hyaluronic acid, the depth and discolouration of the bags visibly improve. And my skin is not only smoother overall but also more firm.

 5. Reduces facial redness

There are a variety of things that cause facial redness, but for me, it’s my sinus issues. After a particularly bad day, hyaluronic acid is the product I use when I want to calm down inflammation and redness in my skin. Since I have tried various products to help me with this issue, I can firmly say that hyaluronic acid is the fastest-acting product I have used.
