High school sweethearts celebrate diamond anniversary

Roy and Margaret Low tied the knot at the Anglican Church on January 11, 1964.

PINETOWN couple, Roy and Margaret Low, celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on January 11.

Starting off as high school sweethearts, the lovebirds said this monumental milestone feels surreal as the time flew by too quickly. They added that they feel blessed to reach this special mark.

Growing up in the Queensburgh area, the couple stayed just one road away from one another and both attended Queensburgh High School when it was a co-ed school. They also attended the same church.

They said their first date was organised by their parents.

“There was a social dance in Greenwood Park. I did not have a date, and my father asked her parents if she could go with me. After that first date, we went everywhere together,” said Roy.

When he found a job at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) studios in Johannesburg, Roy said he wrote letters to Margaret regularly and drove every weekend to see her.

After dating for a few years, the couple tied the knot in 1964 at the Anglican Church in Malvern.

They stayed in Johannesburg for a few years before returning to the Queensburgh area and lived there for 22 years before settling at the Fairydene Retirement Village in Pinetown where they have resided for the past 16 years.

Margaret’s lovely personality is what Roy said he loves most about his wife. “She also had beautiful legs, and she put up with my nonsense,” said Roy with a smile.

Margaret mentioned that she loves Roy for just being himself. “I have never wanted anyone else. I would not say it was love at first sight, but the love developed after a few dates. When my parents said I could go with him to the dance, I was not worried or shocked as I knew him,” she said.

The Lows’ sitting room is filled with piles of DVDs as they say they love watching movies.

Asked about their favourite movie, Roy sighed and said, ‘Wow!’ and agreed that Letters to Juliet is their favourite thus far.

On Friday, they host a movie afternoon for the residents at Fairydene Retirement Village.

Getting along and being patient with one another is what Roy and Margaret believe has kept them together for so many years.

They are blessed with three children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
