Spice up your support at CAST fundraiser

Bring your family and friends along to the CAST fundraiser which is combined with Home Ground Westville Church's 60th Anniversary celebration.

THE Church Alliance for Social Transformation (CAST) Christmas Market fundraiser is taking place on Friday, December 1, and Saturday, December 2, and everyone is invited to support this worthy cause.

The market is combined with Home Ground Westville Church’s 60th Anniversary celebration.

Westville resident Emiliah Govender is one of the vendors who will have a stall at the market. She will be selling her sauce which is very popular among the community.

Her chilli sauce has a kick and bursts with flavour. She will also sell roti and curry.

Govender, who described herself as a socialite, said she loves engaging with and meeting new people.

“Being able to go to markets and sell gives me that opportunity. It also helped me find my passion, which is teaching, something I took up after studying for a year to be a lawyer,” she said.

The 22-year-old said this is her second year being part of the market.

“Last year, I was very impressed, and it went really well. That is the reason I am back again this year. I started with thrifting, collecting second-hand clothes and jewellery. As time went by, I recalled that my mother used to make a chilli sauce using her special recipe.”

Remembering that her mother’s side hustling made a huge difference in their lives while growing up, Govender decided to start up the business again.

Beaming with pride, she said she uses mostly ingredients from her garden. This encourages her to spend more time working in the garden.

“It is therapeutic, and it keeps one fit, and with the price of food nowadays, I would encourage people to have a small garden in their yards – you get everything fresh,” she said with a smile.

Govender said she believes there is always room to make some money.

“You just need to plan, save and invest. You must also be committed and be consistent. People must start small – it cannot just happen overnight.”

The funds raised from the event will go towards supporting the Just Leaders programme.

CAST communications officer Rolan Gulston said they aim to empower young people to be ‘just leaders’, leaders who are fully equipped to understand what justice in their local areas looks like and how to lead others towards this.

The event will be held on Friday from 17:00 to 21:00, and Saturday from 08:00 to 14:00. It will be held at 2 Church Place, Westville.

“Bring your family and friends along to find the perfect gifts for loved ones, and tuck into some delicious food. Children are sure to have a ball at the carnival on Friday night! Small business owners are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Gulston.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
