World-renowned SA youth choir comes to Durban

Talented South Africans are no strangers to making a name for themselves on the international stage, and the Mzansi Youth Choir is one such talent. In May, the choir gave a breathtaking performance that earned them the first-ever audience golden buzzer moment on the America’s Got Talent stage. They not only progressed to the semi-finals but also performed in the finals on September 26. Although they didn’t win, they were invited to perform a traditional song and the Coldplay signature song, Fix You, with Coldplay at two sold-out concerts in San Diego and Los Angeles. The choir is now embarking on a national tour, including a stop in Durban, South Africa, on November 18, where they will make their debut live show appearance. Another first for the choir – they will perform with Canadian alt-pop duo Neon Dreams.

This is all happening at The Globe at Suncoast Casino Entertainment World on November 18 at 20:00. Tickets are available at https://www.quicket.co.za/events/132949-mzansi-youth-choir/#/ from R250 per ticket.

New breast cancer support group meeting

A new breast cancer support group called Abreast will be meeting at Red Point Church at 80a Caversham Road, Pinetown. The first meeting will be held on Saturday, November 18, from 10:00 to 12:00.

The meeting will be facilitated by Liesl Way who is a physiotherapist and certified lymphoedema therapist.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Way said a diagnosis of breast cancer is often a formidable and overwhelming start to a journey of courage and vulnerability. A key to walking this journey with confidence is to surround oneself with supportive family and friends, as well as knowledgeable and caring healthcare providers.

She said breast cancer treatment is a vital lifesaving intervention but can lead to a complication known as secondary lymphoedema.

According to the physiotherapist, this can reduce shoulder mobility and strength and lead to poor posture which will compromise the efficiency of the lymphatic system.

She advised that early intervention and education are key in preventing the progression of this condition.

Attendance for the support group is free but prebooking is essential. Phone or WhatsApp on 060 663 4398 by Monday, November 13.

The King of Broken Things play

The King of Broken Things is back by popular demand. The play is a multi-award-winning whimsical, profound and poignant one-hander by Theatresmiths’ Michael Taylor Broderick, featuring Cara Roberts (as a young boy). You can watch one or all of the three shows at the Bridge Theatre in Durban North, situated at the Northlands Primary School campus (20 Gleneagles Drive) on Friday, November 17 at 19:00, Saturday, November 18 at 16:00 and Sunday, November 19 at 16:00.

The King of Broken Things. . . is a show about hope, about fixing and mending, about forgiving and about healing – all of these are key ingredients that are much needed in our beloved country right now,” says writer/producer/director Michael Taylor Broderick.

The King of Broken Things gently deals with many issues facing society today: bullying, prejudice, gratuitous waste, absent fathers and the futility and consequences of war. All of these themes are keenly and wryly observed by the young protagonist. Because these ideas are expressed by a child, they are more honest and forthright – acceptance is where change and healing begin.

Book your tickets in advance through Webtickets. Tickets are R120 or R140 each.
There will be guarded on-site parking

Can side-splitting laughter and classical music mix?

Starting on Wednesday, November 22 and continuing on until Sunday, December 3, Macbob Productions follows on from their remarkable success of last year’s season of Classical Comedy. The Durban City Orchestra and the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre management are delighted to present some more Classical Comedy – the madcap outrageous musical comedy collaboration, which
comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on the UKZN campus to welcome the festive season.

The production will build on from last year’s inaugural season – with a reprise of many of the
fabulous sketches and tunes, as well as some sparkling new ones.

Join Durban’s own Aaron Mcilroy and Lisa Bobbert as they once more boldly go where no
right-minded comedians should ever venture – the sacred space of The Orchestra. No
sonata is sacred. No movement, unmortified as they migrate from Bach to Beethoven… to
Bedlam. This is a musical celebration fit for the whole family, guaranteed to bring a chuckle to
Tchaikovsky, a roar to Radetsky and a burp to Brahms!

Classical Comedy is once more directed by the multi-talented Darren King and
choreographed by Daisy Spencer. Lisa and Aaron are joined by their son, Declan, who is out of
sight handling spotlights, and two of their daughters, Kaylee and Grace. The girls, now all
grown up and looking fab, provide backing vocals, some contemporary and ballet dancing,
and on-stage assistance.

The Durban City Orchestra (DCO) is one of the longest-running orchestras in the country. It
is independent of the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and is made up of independent professionals; active and retired music teachers; university music students and part-time musicians who participate voluntarily for the love of music and of performing together.

Tickets can be booked through Computicket and are R200 and R180 for pensioners and students. There is safe on-site parking, and the Sneddon has a generator in the event of load-shedding.

The show times are as follows:
Week one:
Wednesday, November 22 – 19:00
Thursday, November 23 – 19:00
Friday, November 24 – 19:00
Saturday, November 25 – 15:00
Sunday, November 26 – 15:00
Week two:
Thursday, November 30 – 19:00
Friday, December 1 – 19:00
Saturday, December 2 – 15:00 and 19:00
Sunday, December 3 – 15:00
