Support The Baby Home Durban North and treat yourself big-time

The Baby Home Durban North World Adoption Day Charity Ball takes place on Saturday, November 11 at 18:30 for 19:00. The theme for this year’s ball is ‘Symphony of Love’. The event will be held at African Sky at the Coastlands Hotel, uMhlanga.

Jo Teunissen, who runs The Baby Home, helps provide love, care and a safe environment for vulnerable and abandoned babies. The ball, which was hosted for the first time in 2017, has seen more than R100 000 raised since its inaugural event.

Danny Guselli will be the MC of the event, and Brent Lindeque (The Good Things Guy) will be the guest speaker.

There will also be a fun collaboration with artist Shaun Oakley (That Damn Vandal), and Shelley McLean will provide entertainment.

“This is one of our biggest events of the year,” said Teunissen. “The whole idea behind the ball is to use it as a fundraiser for the home but also to create awareness around adoption. I think many people see it [adoption] as a rigmarole, and we hope the event will highlight the success stories – and it’s just a beautiful opportunity to share and celebrate adoption.”

The dress code is black tie, formal and traditional. The cost is R900 per person or R8 000 for a table of 10. To find out more or to RSVP, email jo@peaceagency.org.za.

Enjoy a feast of Baroque music

Friends of Music presents Variations, a programme of Baroque Music with Ralitza Macheva on the Baroque violin and Erik Dippenaar on the harpsichord. The concert will take place on Sunday, November 12 at 15:00 at the Durban Jewish Centre.

Erik Dippenaar will play the harpsichord.

A popular genre during the Baroque period was so-called ‘sets of variations’ or ‘divisions’ where composers often composed variations and embellishments on folk melodies or hymns. Erik Dippenaar and Ralitza Macheva present a programme of virtuoso sets of variations from the Baroque period, including music by Corelli and Buxtehude. The programme also includes a collection of newly composed sets of variations for solo violin, in a Baroque style, by Montreal-based composer and early music specialist, Matthias Maute (born 1963), as well as an improvised set of variations on the harpsichord by Dippenaar.

Entrance is R120 for members and R140 for non-members. Tickets are available at the door – cash only. For more information, contact millark.millar@gmail.com or phone Keith at 071 505 1021.
