Then, Halloween can still be a load of fun for you. In fact, it’s just taking off in Durban after we’ve watched the US and UK celebrate it for years without taking part. So, why not jump right into the Halloween vibe this year and learn a trick or two, or enjoy a treat or three?

Cosy community affair in Glenwood

This Saturday, Sica Guest House is hosting a fun family afternoon of Halloween Trick or Treats, followed by rugby.

Since 2014, the creative and community-spirited residents of Ferguson Road in Glenwood have hosted a fabulous family-friendly Halloween party on their road. Part of the fun was the preparation – residents got together to make their own decorations using recycled materials. This annual tradition came to an end over lockdown. . . but is being revived again this year!

Those decorations that have survived the floods are being retrieved from various storerooms and dusted off, and costumes are being dug out of the back of the cupboards and freshened up in preparation for neighbourhood trick-or-treating.

This year, the organisers are keeping the event cosy – with entry being limited to 150 creepin’ kiddies (and their grown-ups) on the grounds of Sica’s Guest Lodge, 19 Owen Avenue, Westridge, from 16:30.

To enter, you need a ticket, which costs R50, and a bag of wrapped sweets to share per participating child. Off-road parking is limited, so car-pooling is recommended.

This year’s event is being hosted by the Manor Gardens Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, supported by Ferguson Road residents. There will be food and drinks on sale, and the Rugby World Cup final will be televised on a big screen.

In the event of bad weather, the event will be postponed by a week. Check the Ferguson Road Halloween Facebook page for updates and details.

Trick or Treat – or haunted hallway, anyone?

There will be tons of food stalls selling an array of food, including Thai, desserts and boerewors rolls; inflatables; a craft gin and beer garden, and a spin booth.
