Explaining about the programme, Librarian Nomusa Martini said this is part of the library’s programme where they help children from schools that do not have a library or any school that could possibly benefit from the programme.
The day starts as the learners gather for a workshop inside the library to learn about the basic rules of the library, the process of borrowing a book from the library and how to take care of it at home.

Furthermore, the learners also get an opportunity to learn about fire safety. The Gillitts Fire Department was also present on the day to teach the learners what to do in a case of fire emergency. The learners also had an opportunity to be inside the fire truck to learn about the different tools firefighters use when they are on duty.

“The Hillcrest Library was happy to host learners from Ntandoyenkosi, Zimiseleni and St Leo Primary Schools. This serves as an opportunity for learners to learn the basics about libraries. We believe that children should get into the habit of reading as soon as possible, and we are always happy to do our part in contributing to that. The Hillcrest Library is open to people of all ages, including children, and this day was to demonstrate that,” she said.

Martini said this programme happens three times a year, and schools are invited to be a part of it. Teachers or schools around the Hillcrest area that would like to involve their learners can get in contact with Hillcrest Library.
