Residents irate at flowing raw sewage

Queensburgh residents are at their wit’s end about the sewage that has been flowing on Glendale Road for the past three months.

QUEENSBURGH residents have been exposed to raw sewage flowing in proximity to their homes.

Residents said the sewage has been pouring out of the drain at the corner of Glendale and Braeside Roads below Tafta Park for nearly three months.

“The raw sewage is pouring across the road and into the stream, and pedestrians have to wade through it. There is another spillage at the other end of Glendale Road that is also pouring into the stream. This is a health problem for everyone in the area, not to mention the amount of raw sewage that is ending up in the sea,” said a concerned resident.

The resident said their anxiety about the issue is due to their long exposure to this raw sewage as it has been flowing for months now.

“We hope this can be resolved soon. It is a health hazard. We appeal for our street to get cleaned, at least, while we wait for the repair. We have not had any relief. The sooner this is resolved, the better for everyone. Is this an unreasonable request? The health of our community is at risk,” said a resident.

Another resident, Janet Nicholson, said there has been a spill pouring out at the corner of Glendale and Braeside Roads recently.

“But the spill at the other end of Glendale is still pumping out across the road and into the stream and giving off a dreadful smell. There is grey toilet paper all across the road. I hope this is on their list to be fixed!

“The issue is getting much worse. The area is totally unliveable.”

The residents said they have been told by workers that they are unable to locate a manhole farther down the street and will have to access the map of the area to find the manhole and then possibly jet the area in question.

“This was a few weeks ago – the truck came out for about 12 minutes and then left. There has been no improvement to the bottom of Glendale Road. The top section near the retirement home has been repaired, but as I feared, the bottom has been forgotten,” said a resident.

Ward councillor Samantha Windvogel said it is unacceptable that the residents are forced to endure such a stench.
“The matter is getting worse, and I have escalated it with the relevant departments on many occasions,” she said.
