Donation of trees breathes new life into school

The trees donated at Lyndhurst Primary School will provide shade to learners and educators during sunny and hot days.

SEPTEMBER is Arbour Month and is celebrated annually in South Africa, encouraging all citizens to plant indigenous trees.

To commemorate this, the eThekwini Municipality Parks and Recreational Department donated 10 trees to Lyndhurst Primary School.

Principal Dr Sara Moodley said they were grateful for the donation.

“The trees have been planted in strategic areas of the school that, in time, will provide shade to learners and teachers during sunny and hot days,” said Moodley.

The children were taught about the importance of trees to the planet, and the task of watering and feeding the trees has been given to the Grade One learners to encourage ongoing interest in the environment.

Lyndhurst Grade One learners, Mpilwenhle Mhlongo, Azile Goba, Tyreese Soobramoney, Kimlee Maritz and Mpilwenhle Mhlongo, excited about Arbour Month.

Moodley thanked the Department Head, Mo Mather, for reaching out to the municipality to provide the school with trees. “They responded quickly and came out to assist in planting the trees with our learners.”

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
