WATCH: Heavy rains causes Palmiet River swells

The City has since advised the public to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams and to be cautious when travelling after the heavy rains in Durban.

A PINETOWN resident has shared a video of water gushing through the Palmiet River.

The resident said she was shocked to see the water swiftly running in a weird way alongside the river which runs at the back of her house in Tunbridge Drive, Cowies Hill.

“The worst part is that the water stinks like a sewer,” she said.

The resident added that she believes this may have been caused by the heavy rainfall.

Earlier today, the municipality sent out a warning to the public to be cautious as the inclement weather may result in fast-flowing streams and deep water.

“The public is also advised to avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams and to be cautious when travelling.”

High-intensity rainfall is predicted over the central and northern coastal area and western interior from 10:00 today, Tuesday, June 27 until 02:00 on Wednesday, June 28.

River champion, Lee D’Eathe reported that the rainfall readings at 15:00 on Tuesday were 36.00mm, Campbell Road New Germany @ 21.2km and 38.00mm, Westville North @9.85km upstream of the confluence of the Palmietand Umgeni Rivers.

“‘The Palmiet River rages due to the incentivised accelerated development without the necessary matching stormwater attenuation,” said D’Eathe.
