Learners wrap up warm challenge

St Mary's community wrapped up their challenge as they handed over blankets to 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

67 BLANKETS for Nelson Mandela happily received over 200 blankets from St Mary’s DSG Kloof. After taking up the challenge to be part of a good cause that will keep people warm this winter, the St Mary’s community gathered during knitathons and dedicated their time.

Heading the project, St Mary’s Senior Primary teacher Tracy Laubscher said one of their old girls who is part of 67 Blankets approached them with the idea.
“We thought it would be a great idea for us to be part of this initiative. We then sent out a message to our community, including parents and grandparents. We started out with lessons, and we would host a knitathon where mothers and daughters or grandmothers and granddaughters would meet and knit together,” she said.

Laubscher said this was special for them to make, and the dedication of the St Mary’s community showed. “It feels good to know that we will be blessing 210 people. This is about the gift of time because every square made was investment, and for everybody else, it was about giving of ourselves, and the girls really did put their heart and soul into it,” she said.

Sue Hubach of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela said they are grateful to the school for taking part in knitting blankets. “We are happy that we have formed this relationship, and the girls have done an amazing job. We are looking forward to laying these blankets on June 10 at our local ‘Blanket is Lekker’ event,” she said.

Hubach said they are still in need of as many people as possible to come and crochet with them and join the organisation. The group meets at the Springside Cafe in Hillcrest every Wednesday, from 09:00 to 12:00.
“Anybody is welcome – we will teach you to knit and crochet. We believe it joins us together – all our lives are joined together – and it is incredible,” she said.
