Local singer releases powerful track

Nicholas Arumugam believes in the power of music as he said it has pulled him through difficult times in his life.

PINETOWN singer Nicholas Arumugam has released a track entitled Falling.

The 30-year-old said he started singing at church from an early age. With strong roots in contemporary gospel music, Arumugam said the church is where he honed his vocal talents, and music became his first love.

“I guess music chose me; music got me through some really difficult times in my life,” he said.

The former Kloof High School learner said he recalls fond memories of his dad playing Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and the many greats in his taxi.

“I also remember my uncle playing Bob Marley records. I think my interest started there, however, this was not where my career started. My career started at the age of 13 when my dad asked me to lead Praise and Worship at my church. Since then, I have not looked back, with my strong roots being in gospel music with pop influences.

“I knew after high school that I wanted to work in music,” said Arumugam.

The highlight in his music career thus far has been hearing his music being played on the radio for the first time.

He mentioned that being an independent artist is challenging as he wears many hats – not just as a singer, but he has to learn skills like promoting his music.

“Taking care of the business side of it can be challenging but worth it when I receive positive feedback from fans – it outweighs the challenges,” he said.

Talking about his track, Falling, he said the song has been on his playlist for some time now. “I kept going back to it. Maybe because it is so relatable to me. It has a deep meaning that actions cannot be undone and that sometimes bad choices can bring you down.”

The video is also out, and Arumugam said it was directed and filmed by Zac Harris. It is produced and recorded by Andrew Sutton and mastered by Wil Borza. Tiffany Retallick is a dancer in the video.

He added that his future goals include doing a tour around the country, and maybe he will write more original songs and put together an album.
