Non-profits join hands to warm hearts

The Valley Trust and the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust appeal to the public to help keep their beneficiaries warm and well clothed this winter.

THE Valley Trust and Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust are calling for support from the Upper Highway community for a combined winter clothing and blanket drive to benefit children and families from the greater Valley of 1000 Hills area.

“As we all feel the chill in the air and haul our winter blankets and clothing from storage, we ask for your help to keep these families warm and well clothed this winter,” said the Valley Trust’s Pippa Whittle.

The Valley Trust’s flagship project is the Khula Kahle Mntwana Project (KKM) – isiZulu for ‘Grow Well, Child’, which helps over 1000 caregivers in The Valley of 1 000 Hills take better care of their young children.

“We impact 1 700 children each year through teaching their caregivers about health and parenting, assisting with vegetable gardens and financial savings as well as providing psycho-social support.

“The project targets children and caregivers in their homes and seeks to adopt a holistic view to meet the development needs of young children,” she said.

HACT’s Clothing Scheme helps more than 40 vulnerable households from the Valley of 1000 Hills create a source of income.
According to Whittle, many of these households include patients who have been discharged from the Respite and Palliative Unit and/or family members who have recently lost a breadwinner.

“Purchasing bags of second-hand clothing for just R25 each, which have been generously donated by the public, enables our beneficiaries to become entrepreneurial and sell children and adult’s clothing in their communities to generate income. In addition to helping to feed and clothe vulnerable families, each bag of clothing represents hope and dignity for those who sell them.”

She added that they welcome adults and children’s clothing and blankets, as well as non-perishable food items.

“Please mark which organisation you are donating items to,” she said.

Drop-off point is at Hillcrest Aids Centre – Ubuntu Ground Cafe, from Tuesday, May 16 to Tuesday, May 30. The items can be dropped off from Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00, and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00.
