Move and groove to support victims

Two women, a dance fitness instructor and the other the founder of a non-profit organisation, have come together to collect comfort packs for rape victims. The comfort packs will be donated to Operation Bobbi Bear and the Jess Foord Foundation.

IF you’re going to dance, make sure you do it like nobody’s watching and that you’re ‘dancing against rape’.

“The secretary of Aunty H’s Helping Hand attends my class. I noticed her WhatsApp status last year and asked if they would mind if I assisted by having a fitness morning. It ended up being two Saturday mornings,” said Tarine Keet.

Hanneli Preston, fondly known as Aunty H, welcomed the initiative, which takes place on June 3 this year, at the Queensburgh Sports Club in Escombe, from 08:00 to 10:00.

“I have been doing this for years and was even the Queensburgh Woman of the Year. We got involved with Tarine last year. It’s been difficult to get the bags for Bobbi Bear as a lot of support dwindled during Covid,” she said.
The event comprises dance fitness, Taebo and yoga, all in the name of showing love, care and support for rape victims. “The entry fee is not cash but a rape care kit bag filled with toiletries and items a rape victim may need,” said Preston.

These kits are for victims between the ages of two and 12 as well as teenagers of both genders, therefore, items need to be applicable to these ages.

If you’re unable to attend, donations of items towards the bags are welcome.
“You can either contact me or Hanneli to arrange drop-off or collection of the items. The NPO can also supply a letter confirming a company donation for tax purposes, if needed,” said Keet.

Items that can be donated include unscented sanitary pads, underwear, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a face cloth, tissues, colouring pens or crayons, a drawstring bag and a deodorant or roll-on.
“If you are able to sponsor items only, in whatever quantity, that’s also fine. We must stress that the pads for the comfort packs have to be unscented though,” said Preston.

Light snacks and refreshments will be available to supporters on the day. The organisers are looking forward to an even bigger and better event this year.
