UKZN responds to theft on their campuses that have scared students

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed no suspension of any classes following crime incidents on their campuses, including the Westville and Edgewood campuses. This comes after there have been reports of criminal activities that included students being robbed of their cellphones, laptops and money on the campus premises.

The university confirmed that they have been facing crime incidents on their campuses.
“Regarding the crimes on campus and in residences, there have been two notable incidents. On April 14, in the early hours of the morning, some students were robbed at the EG Malherbe Main Library on the Howard College campus. Three unknown males entered the library and robbed five students of their belongings, including three laptops and five cellphones.

“Another robbery took place at a UKZN residence on April 7. On April 20, SAPS arrested two suspects in connection with the robbery, who were expected to appear in court on April 21. The university welcomes the arrest and commends the police for their swift action,” they stated.

The university further stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding these incidents, including allegations that some staff members may have enabled or abetted the crimes.

“The library robbery happened soon after the suspension of approximately 10 staff members belonging to the Risk Management Services division. UKZN is committed to purging all divisions of criminal elements, regardless of pressure, intimidation, or incitement.

“In the same vein, we must praise the diligent RMS staff who consistently perform their duties with excellence. A recent example involves members of the Edgewood campus in Pinetown RMS who successfully tracked a suspect responsible for stealing two laptops from students at an off-campus residence. The laptops have since been recovered and returned to their rightful owners,” they said.

In response to these incidents, the university said they are taking several actions to enhance security on campus and in residences.
“During a meeting held with the SRC last Tuesday, University Management emphasised that, although UKZN’s security budget allocation is already higher than the ideal amount, the institution remains committed to optimising the efficiency of its current security measures, services, and operating procedures. By focusing on enhancing RMS capabilities, the university aims to effectively address safety-related issues and other concerns,” they said.

The university encouraged everyone to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities. Furthermore, the university advised all staff and students to carry their access cards at all times while on campus, ensuring easy identification.
