Social soccer serves community

Sunil Sukhdao says for the past three years these games have helped the youth in fighting social ills and they've brought the community closer together.

SOCIAL soccer games have been a hit with the Queensburgh Community with more than 70 members joining the group. Social games are organised twice a week at Inferno Soccer Arena, located at West Park School at 382 Stella Road where an astro turf arena has been installed for soccer games.

Sunil Sukhdao, owner of Inferno Soccer Arena, said there are various teams that book the arena on a daily basis after school hours, on weekends and holidays. He accommodates football requirements for all age groups.
“This includes social games, competitive football and children from various soccer clubs at grass-roots levels,” he said.

Among the soccer players who make use of the court is Kameryn Singh.

“We meet twice a week, for now. We have more than 70 members so far, and if you are in the area or surrounds, you can put your name down and join for a game,” he explained.

Those interested in playing will be added to a WhatsApp group where they can sign up for games. Once 12 players have put their hands up to play, a social game is organised with a six-a-side. Sukhdao added that the soccer arena has enriched the community, especially the youth.

“In the past three years, it has brought the community together and helps [youth] to avoid youth drug and alcohol abuse by coming to the arena and having fun and enjoying a football match. This has become home to many of the supporting teams from far and wide,” he said, adding that the arena offers youth a chance to develop their skills on the soccer field.

Sukhdao explained that the court was developed in 2019 to promote football among soccer players of all ages from all walks of life.

“Ever since, we’ve tried to accommodate all levels of football by means of tournaments, leagues and friendly games,” added Sukdao.

His passion for the sport inspired Sukhdao to develop the arena. “I’ve always had a passion for playing high level football abroad, but unfortunately, during my era, I was unable to do so. Hence, I felt the need to add more value to reach out and empower those who have the same dream,” he said.
