Duo creates fun memories for children

Jacinta Cunningham and Oscar Buthelezi visit different orphanages and children's homes on a regular basis to create fun-lasting memories for the kids.

IT takes a village to raise a child – this saying has a very special place in Kids’ Love Foundation founder, Jacinta Cunningham.

The 24-year-old Ashley resident said she will forever be grateful for the assistance she received from her neighbourhood while growing up.

Cunningham was raised by her grandmother in the Mariannridge area, and they lived mostly from hand to mouth.

“We had many people who willingly assisted us, and that gave me a compassionate heart with a desire to give back wherever I can.”

Although Cunningham works at a call centre, she goes out of her way to help where she can.

“The idea of registering an NGO came from a childhood friend of mine, Oscar Buthelezi, whom I work closely with on this organisation.

“He motivated me as he also has the same dream and passion. I know what it feels like to not get the things you want so I made a promise to myself and to God that I will make a difference no matter how small it is,” she said.

The warm-hearted Cunningham said they visit different orphanages and children’s homes on a regular basis.

“We don’t just go and drop off items, but we bring excitement as we host recreational activities for the children – we show them love. We want to create memorable childhood experiences which they can cherish.”

The duo said they allocate a timeframe in each home, and they are currently working closely with St Vincent’s Children’s Home situated at the Mariannhill Monastery.

“On Human Rights Day, we had an event at the home, and the children took part in plays and dance. We gave them party packs, and they had so much fun. Children just need love and interaction; they do not need big things to make them happy,” she said.

Cunningham highlighted that the children have so much potential and talent, and by hosting these activities, they hope that someone can recognise them and it can be a start of the bigger things for them.

“On April 1, we hosted a sport day at the home. This was held during school holidays so that when the children go back to school, they can also share about the exciting thing that they did,” Cunningham said with a smile.

Most of the things we buy using money from our own pockets, but Knowles SPAR once generously allowed us to use the store as a drop-off point.

“We are now hoping to find a central place, but we also do pick-ups.”

She added that St Vincent Children’s Home has 65 children, and they are always in need of food, clothes and toys.
