Help fix SPCA’s driveway

The collapsing driveway filled with gigantic potholes is an inconvenience for both the staff and the public.

THE condition of the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s driveway is deteriorating each day as the potholes are getting bigger.

The issue of the terrible state of the SPCA’s driveway was highlighted by a resident who took to Facebook to plead with residents to sponsor tar and help cover the terrible potholes and collapsing driveway.

SPCA’s manager, Barbara Patrick, said the potholes are bad, and they are such an inconvenience. “We would love to have them fixed,” she added.

According to Patrick, they do have someone who pledged to fix the driveway all the way from top to bottom – and widen it. “But September this year will be exactly three years of waiting for approval.

“The fixing of the entire road will make access to the SPCA easier for everyone. Because we have been waiting for so long for approval, the condition is deteriorating, and this could have been prevented. We do not have the money to cover these potholes – we have residents who bring tar from time to time to cover them, but it does not last,” she said.

The SPCA’s operations manager, Sarah van Heerden, said their premises is a perfect place to host their fundraising events as they depend on donations.

The driver of one of Kloof and Highway SPCA’s inspectors’ tries to avoid one of the holes in the driveway.

“This driveway puts people off and is an inconvenience for many people. Our inspectors are forever on the road, rescuing animals – it not right for the animals, especially in an emergency, as they need to slow down significantly to dodge the potholes and give way to other vehicles.

“We have three small cars which we’re unable to avoid the potholes with, and on top of everything, we now need to worry about the maintenance of the cars,” said Van Heerden.

Patrick said the state of the road is shifting their focus. “We are here to deal with cruelty to animals – that is our primary focus.”

The duo said there are cars that had to be towed out after being stuck in the ditch, trying to get away.

“A few motorists have also damaged their tyres due to this. We would appreciate any assistance in covering the holes permanently while we try to get approval.”
