“The project aims to contribute to improving the quality of life of participating cities by promoting sustainable and integrated urban development through the identification of innovative policies and programmes,” said Kaunda.

According to the mayor, four cities from Canada and four cities from South Africa have been selected to participate. The project seeks to develop urban cooperation and promote city-to-city partnerships between EU and non-EU local authorities in Canada, South Africa, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

The City of Durban has been partnered with the Greater Region of Porto (Portugal) on learning how to relate to the Circular Economy.  Kuanda said the EU’s previous experience with the Belfast/Durban exchange influenced the acceptance into this year’s programme.

Mayor Ribeiro said he appreciates the opportunity to engage with the eThekwini Municipality on the challenges faced by cities worldwide and the international responses and experiences which will be pooled for the benefit of the participating cities.
