Young talent spreads his wings

Tristen Trollip is set to fly to Romania as he launches his rugby career abroad.

WATERFALL resident and rugby player Tristen Trollip is reaching for the international stars as he bags a deal with a rugby club abroad. The 21-year-old’s rugby career started with a local rugby club when he was nine years old. Trollip is set to join the CSM Baia Mare rugby club in Romania for a five-year contract. This is a dream come true for the rugby player as he believes this is a step closer to his dreams of playing international.

“This opportunity came through my agent who is on the ground looking for such opportunities. I am glad that I am finally moving closer to my dream. This dream was delayed in 2020 because of Covid. I was selected to go play aboard but could not because of the travel restrictions,” he said.

Describing his journey in the sport, Trollip said he started playing for the Hillcrest Villagers at nine years old, and he has always made it onto A teams until high school at Maritzburg College. “I played for the Varsity Shield for two years, which is UKZN’s first team. In 2021, I got a call from The Sharks to train with them for a year. I am currently studying towards a Sports Science Degree at UKZN, which I am giving up for now for the international offer,” he explained.

Trollip said he is thrilled with this offer and is busy with the preparations to fly to Romania as he is meant to start with the team towards the end of March. “I am looking forward to playing internationally and learning from other players while playing with them, and experiencing a different set-up from what I am used to,” he said.
Trollip said the club he will play in is a first-division club, and he hopes to play for Romania’s National team and other countries as he progresses in his career.
