Donate books to bring joy to Malvern Children’s Home

The director of Malvern Child and Youth Centre, Andile Ncamana says this centre will aid in allowing the school going children to do their school work and research.

NICOLE Tuttle and Prean Naidoo from the NPO, Hands for Hearts, and Malvern Child and Youth Centre are working hard to bring in an easily accessible library for the kids.

According to Tuttle, they’ve wanted to build a library for a long time.

“We saw a need, and we thought it could be something that is highly educational and beneficial for the children,” she said.

Hands for Hearts discussed the idea with the director of Malvern Child and Youth Centre, Andile Ncamana, who was more than willing to go forward.

The library will be placed in a building that already exists at the Children’s Home. They will be revamping House 11.

Although the hope is for the library to be opened this year, Tuttle explained that this depends on donations.

“We’re hoping it will be done this year, but it depends on donations. It is something that can be done in stages. We are getting donations coming in so it doesn’t have to be 100% finished for us to get it up and going,” Tuttle explained.

The library will not just be a reading zone for the children but also somewhat of a homework centre. The space allocated for the library is big enough for the schoolgoing children to sit in and do their homework, projects and other research.

Ncamana noted that there is also a need for volunteers at the Malvern Child and Youth Centre.

“House parents can only do so much, so it will be nice when there is a centre. Then we can get volunteers to also help the children with homework and doing research,” he explained.

Building a good collection of educational material, fictional books, novels, games and even toys is just one of the many goals of this project. Other important needs for the project are shelving, tables for older children and chairs.

“We are open to anybody who is willing to come and help towards setting up the library in any shape or form,” said Naidoo.
