60 years and going strong

Bruce and Lin Moor share about their blissful union of 60 years.

A COMMON bond of love and family has kept Bruce and Lin Moor married for 60 years. Happy to share their story, the Cowies Hill couple will be commemorating their union on February 9. Bruce said his life has never been the same since he met the love of his life when they were both students.

“We met when we were both students at the Durban University of Technology. I was playing for the University’s cricket team, and Lin was our scorer. We had both graduated when I learned that I had been awarded a scholarship to study for an MA in economics at Cambridge University in England,” said Bruce.

Bruce said they were happily in love and decided to take the journey together. According to the couple, Lin was employed as a secretary in the Zoology Department. Her earnings provided a much-needed supplement to Bruce’s meagre scholarship allowance until their son Steven was born shortly before the end of their Cambridge sojourn.
We returned to South Africa in July 1964, and Bruce started his sugar engineering career as a pupil engineer at Mt Edgecombe Mill, then called Maidstone, progressing thereafter through engineering and management positions, eventually becoming technical director of Tongaat Hulett Sugar Division,” said the couple.

Among other things, the couple share three children together – two daughters and one son. “Our marriage has been extremely happy and blessed by strong common interests – first our family, but also our faith, sport, music and our love of game reserves and travel.

“We are blessed to have our two daughters, Alison and Kathryn, both living near to us and visiting regularly and our son Steven, who lives in the UK, visiting at least once a year. We also derive great pleasure from following the progress of our grandchildren as they complete their tertiary studies and commence their careers,” said the couple.

Bruce said he has always had support from his wife, and they worked through their challenges together. “In August 2021, Lin was diagnosed with colorectal and liver cancer. Since then, she has been receiving chemotherapy, which is slowly healing her cancers, but it drains her energy reserves. This treatment has prevented us from carrying on with our usual travel activities, but we hope to resume some local travel in the near future,” he said.

The couple have also shared happy memories from when they served the community together. “We have been involved with our churches and at All Saints Maidstone; Bruce was church warden while Lin was parish recorder, organist and choir mistress. Lin is an accomplished pianist and organist, but her playing has unfortunately been restricted in recent years by arthritis. We were involved with the recording duties at All Saints Pinetown until Covid interrupted this function. We then handed it over to younger volunteers,” they said.

Bruce and Lin extended their gratitude to the loving people who surround them, including their children and grandchildren.
