Man walks from Jozi to Durban to raise funds for KZN flood-damaged schools

Local man is passionate about helping children who are in need of a new school.

‘If you can be anything, be kind.’

A SELFLESS man, Dale van Blerk, has taken it upon himself to raise awareness among the public and corporate for the need to rebuild schools in KZN that were damaged during the floods in April last year.

Molweni school, Dawede, and St Nivard’s Primary School in Umzinto are two schools that have been identified by Van Blerk and his team.

Walking 600km from Johannesburg to Durban, Van Blerk is expected to arrive at Dawede Primary School tomorrow, Monday, January 30.

The Johannesburg man left the comfort of his home on January 4 with only basic everyday apparel and items, together with a trail of kindness and care from locals along the way, and an outpouring of hospitality from hotel groups and homeowners offering a bed, food packs and medical supplies, moral support and mental wellness.

Van Blerk thanked everyone who has helped him as he is now very close to crossing the finish line.

“We have identified two schools in KZN, and the plans with Alternative Building Technology have been approved by the Department of Education.

“I have faith that the whole country and its communities will support this initiative for us to make a change in South Africa with education technology,” he said.

He said 2022 was a year of many challenges that followed Covid-19 and the lockdown.

“The worst region hit was KZN, followed by the floods that shook the province and crippled infrastructure. Lives were lost, and children were stranded without schools and education.”
