Where to find the best Christmas lights in Durban

We have compiled a short list of homes to visit to see the best and brightest Christmas lights.

FOR most people, Christmas really is the ‘most wonderful time of the year’, and while the humid climate of Durban is as far away from the snow-covered homes you usually associate with the festive season, there are always Christmas lights to lift your spirits and bring joy to all who see it.

We at Caxton Local Media have compiled a short list of places to make your nights merry and bright and where to find the best Christmas lights.

Upper Highway (Waterfall)

For those in the Upper Highway area, you can visit this home at the intersection of Umtata Road and Niagara Drive in Waterfall. The incredible home is open to the public to view until December 24 from 19:00 to 21:00.

Durban North and La Lucia

In Durban North, there are two places worth checking out – both Annie’s Busy Beez Baby Care and Preschool on 37 Romsey Grove and the Remax Panache office in Durban North on Newport Avenue. In both venues, there is ample parking to come out and admire the lights and snap a few selfies.

The Remax Panache office on Newport Avenue brings the Christmas spirit with its light display.

Drive-thru experience, La Lucia

There is also a drive-thru experience in La Lucia at 3 Glendining Court. Lights are on every night between 19:00 and 22:00 (weather and load-shedding dependent). Ravitha Singh said she welcomes any visitors coming to her home and encourages visitors to enjoy the experience. Singh, a dog mom and a volunteer for Pug Rescue SA is also hosting a fundraising initiative for the non-profit organisation (NPO).

Pug Rescue SA rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes unwanted, abandoned, neglected and surrendered pugs.

“We would love for people to experience the splendour of our Christmas decorations. We are also encouraging visitors to donate a can of Husky dog food, and we are hoping to build a Christmas tree with them. Every can donated will go towards Pug Rescue SA,” she said.

Another fantastic resource for Christmas lights is Durban North resident Gill Amour’s Facebook page: Chasing the Christmas Lights.

“I started the public group for people to share the beautiful pictures they take of Christmas lights in the greater Durban area. It’s a way to share locations for other families to see if they are driving around looking for the lights,” she said.
