Businesses jump on board to keep Dawncliffe beautiful

Dawncliffe residents are involved in maintaining their area.

SOME businesses in Dawncliffe have joined in the initiative of keeping their area clean. This comes after residents in the area took it upon themselves to deliver services. The brainchild of resident Rory Norsitter was that residents raise funds to hire a gardener to maintain their verges.

Norsitter said the aim of the initiative was to maintain the beauty of their area. “We are not prepared to live in squalor and let our place degenerate. We live in a beautiful suburb, and we want to try to at least maintain it to a certain standard for the benefit of our families and their well-being. Though we are not giving up – the Westville Ratepayers Association and other bodies are busy lobbying and putting pressure on authorities to do their jobs,” said Norsitter.

The initiative started a few months ago when a part-time gardener was hired. According to Norsitter, Joseph Mngoma, the gardener, cleans the area; he also looks after the gutters and drains to make sure they are clear. He scrubs and cleans street signs as well as electricity distribution boxes.
This initiative was recently joined by a business in Westville, AMM Gardens, which is now responsible for maintaining the verges that are at the entrance of Dawncliffe.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Yuveena Pakkiri said they knew they wanted to help the community this way. “It has been such a pleasure to contribute to the community this way. It has also been beautiful to watch the progress of the area after some work has been done. This area belongs to the community as people commute here in the mornings and afternoons to and from work,” she said.
Pakkiri said they are eager to do this and are welcoming more businesses to jump on board in order to make their area more beautiful.
