Five braaibroodjie ideas for World Sandwich Day

Typically made with cheese, tomato and onion – here are five ideas to make the braaibroodjie of your dreams on World Sandwich Day.

WORLD Sandwich Day is commemorated on November 3 in honor of the popular lunchtime (or anytime) meal.

Some credit the first sandwich to John Montagu – the 4th Earl of Sandwich – who asked his servant to bring him a meal he could eat with his hands while gambling. Others trace the meal further back to the ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder.

While there is some debate on the origin of the sandwich, today, many versions of the meal are eaten across the globe. From the iconic Po’ Boy of New Orleans to the classic Cape Town Gatsby, communities on all corners of the globe have put their spin on the snack.

A popular local version is the braaibroodjie – typically made with cheese, tomato and onion toasted over a braai. Here are five ideas to make the braaibroodjie of your dreams on World Sandwich Day.

1. Classic with a twist

Keep it classic with cheese and tomato but add a little extra by caramelising the onions before adding them to the sandwich filling. You could also use pre-made onion marmalade, chutney or pickle as a cheat. The beauty of this meal is that it can be as simple or souped-up as you like. Opt for cheddar and chutney or go big with Brie and onion marmalade.

2. Something sweet

If you have a sweet tooth, why not try a jam-and -butter sarmie instead of the classic cheese/tomato combo? Peanut butter and banana slices might just do the trick, as well.

3. Biltong blast

Check at your local store for powdered biltong. It could add an extra burst of flavour to a cheese-and-tomato braaibroodjie or stand well on its own. Try buttering bread and sprinkling the powdered biltong on both sides. Season with spices of your choice and grill the bread face-up for an open sarmie.

4. Garlic and Herb

Here is another simple take on a braaibroodjie. Forget the tomato and cheese and opt for garlic butter, red-onion slices and herbs instead. Dried oregano or fresh rocket make great options.

5. Zinger

Add sliced green chillies to a cheese-and-onion sarmie for a braaibroodjie with a kick. The combo pairs well with fresh coriander or a zesty lemon, yoghurt dipping sauce, or a dollop of cream cheese to balance the heat.
